Shotton's Big Day Out

After a tough goalless draw against 2nd place last week, SCC were determined to get back to winning ways. The weather was the main talking point as the players arrived for the return leg against the Swiss. The 9-0 win in the first game of the season a distant memory. Even with a fair few players away or injured Houlahan still had the difficult task of picking his starting 11 from an extremely strong squad. SCC lined up with Smollett in goal, Rezai, Bowden, Hemmingway and Cullinane at the back. Walter, Gunn and Hulen in the middle of the park and SCC’s answer to Barcelona’s MSN leading the attack – Shotton, Hutch and Naoto. This left the manager with a dream bench of Duric, Sanchez and Goerges The game started with both teams trying to dominate possession and keep control of the ball and it wasn’t long until SCC secured the first goal. Both teams were guilty of some sloppy play which meant neither team kept possession for long in the first 20 minutes. The key difference between the two teams in this time was SCC’s ability to find the back of the net on the chances that presented themselves. After the opening 20 SCC began to dominate possession and with quick switching of the ball, opened up gaps in the Swiss defence which SCC happily exploited. The rest of the half saw more goals which provided SCC a comfortable lead going into the break. I’m not really fully aware of what’s going on around me at the best of times but from what I can remember the goals (not in the right order) were as follows; • Shotton header • Naoto’s first goal – a tidy finish low into the corner of the net. • Shotton header - A fantastic turn from Gunn allowed him enough space to beat his defender near the halfway line and break down the right side to deftly lift the ball over the Swiss centre backs for Shotton to finish off with a powerful header. • Shotton’s shot from the left which the on rushing keeper blocked only to end up on the line for Naoto to tap in. • Hutch – Beating the defender and clinically finishing across goal. • Shotton Penalty. 6-0 and Houlahan’s half time team talk was to stay focused and to continue to play our game. It wasn’t long into the second half when Shotton added to his tally with a penalty after he was taken down in the box. This was shortly followed by his 5th goal of the day which he cheekily dinked over the keeper. Swiss had a few breakaways but never really managed to threaten. This was testament to the SCC defence who limited the chances Swiss had in front of goal. Houlahan, comforted by the score line and to avoid the strengthening rain decided that now was a great chance to watch the rest of the game from the dressing room. He kindly asked for a red card to legitimise this and headed off for an early shower. Substitutes were made and this led to even more opportunities for SCC with Sanchez, Duric and Goerges causing problems for the Swiss defence. Some intricate passing saw Duric selflessly pick out Hutch to help him convince the management he is in fact a striker and not just a luxury right back. The final goal was scored by Duric, who with a great ball from Sanchez slotted home to make it 10-0. All in all, an excellent team performance from SCC who dominated the game and were top class in front of goal.

A day to foget

Not really much to write about, except for perhaps 10 goals.... We were for sure not prepared for this game with another makeshift squad at the back of the reverse fixture (0-9) We started well though and through some really nice combination could have opened the score but Jo Speed hit the post.... 2 minutes and 3 consecutive headers later, 1-0 SCC Flood gates opened thereafter.... This result follows last week's very bitter 3-2 defeat to the Casuals after being 2-0 up. We will continue, bring on the next one......
