Finally....
After five defeats against Latini last season (twice in the league, in Bangkok and twice at the Swiss Cup) the Swiss finally turned the table on Latini.
With a couple of key players missing on both sides it was a very even game in the first half. The Swiss strategy was to keep a clean sheet for as long as possible so as to frustrate Latini. The main focus in the first 20 minutes was on defense, so at least the words of the coach. But the Swiss went one better when Kofi slammed the ball home after one of the many Swiss corner kicks. But all could have gone very differently had Magaud converted after a defensive misunderstanding. A late tackle saved the Swiss from going one down.
With a goal to the good the Swiss grew in confidence and let the ball do the running. Latini were always dangerous but the Swiss also had some very good chances to double the lead. No further excitment until the break.
We expected a furious Latini comeback in the second half, but the Swiss defence stood well and whatever went through was mopped up by outstanding goalkeeper Riduan. The game was virtually over when the Swiss doubled the lead on 60 minutes: Hakim floated a long ball into the box and the goalkeeper could not control it. Schulthess was there so tap in. That was pretty much game, set and match. Kofi scored another goal from a Steinegger cross and Nikos Tsalkitsis put the cherry on the cake with a late goal in the first game for the club. That he started from an offside position did not change the outcome of the game. It was too late for Latini.
Overall no doubt a fully deserved three points for the Swiss. As Arsene Wenger said afther his side demolished Everton: one game is only one game. The Swiss will have to deliver many more performances of that caliber to secure a place in the top 5 of the league. But a good start, no question.
