Straight into the match highlights, and we see Brewekrz having lots of possession and playing a nice passing game. Some of the movement and passing was quite pleasing in the early part of the half. We created chances when we had the ball and also defended well when the Nippon had possession.
Brewerkz were again guilty of some wasteful finishing in front of goal. Our first goal eventually came off a corner after some good work down the right by Stuart. Corner taken by Stuart and Bright coming from the blind side finished nicely for 1-0. Second goal and Stuart again showing some creativity with a neat flick past the defender who moved his arm to block the path of the ball and the referee signalled to the spot. Top scorer Yazid who missed the last few games stepped up to make it 2-0.
The pressure piled on before the break and Brewerkz were lucky to go in at half time with our 2 goal lead after a last ditch clearance on the line by Stuart who was having a very influential game at both ends.
Half time team talk was to keep the tempo up and be careful and not let Nippon back into the game. First 15 minutes of the second half would be crucial and defending was most important.
On the pitch for the second half and we did the exact opposite of what we discussed at half time. Within 10 minutes of the restart it was 2-2.
Some sloppy defending saw the Nippon striker have a free shot from 25 yards which sailed past Nicolas. Then a cross to the far post found another Nippon player free inside the six yard box and his goal bound header was on its way into an empty net with Nicolas out at sea. Everything seemed to suddenly go in slow motion as the ball floated toward our goal and all our defenders stood watching. The ball hit the top of the crossbar and dropped in font of goal where who else but a Nippon striker was on hand to tap the ball in. Just as suddenly as it began the slow motion ended with the Nippon players turning away in celebration and Brewerkz are left shaking our heads.
A change was made, Jon clearly struggling with his knee problem was replaced by Ganesh and Stuart moved into the left back slot. Ganesh made an immediate difference when he came on. On one of his runs, a through ball put him into space behind his marker and he cut in from the right, turned one defender and then another before finishing at the near post. Goal number 4 coming off another corner with Yazid heading in for his second goal and Brewerks up 4-2 and just enough to run out winners on the day.
Referee and linesmen for the second week in a row were outstanding. 10 marks to the referee for bothering to explain his decisions to the players and not threatening yellow cards to shut them up.
There were a few players on the field who put in good performances but my Man of the match has to go to Stuart Aitken who probably played his best game ever as a 17 year old.
Firstly, for his good performance at right midfield in the first half. Always being one step faster than his opponent and getting us 2 goal scoring chances which led to our first 2 goals. Looks like those fast twitch muscles are firing after all!
Secondly, for a very mature performance when asked to do a job at left back after Jon went off injured.
Finally, for a totally wicked 18th Birthday party... the pictures will tell the story.... Happy Birthday Mate!
