Gary Lineker got it wrong
""Soccer is a game for 22 people that run around, play the ball, and one referee who makes a slew of mistakes, and in the end Germany always wins."
That's what Gary Lineker once said, but on this Saturday he was proven wrong at SJI. Both teams had strong line ups, the Swiss changing their starting eleven on five positions compared to last week. Both teams played attacking football and there were plenty of chances at both ends in the first half. GAS looking sharper, but the best chance of the first half fell to the Swiss: Kofi's point blank shot from 10 metres was brilliantly saved by the GAS keeper. On the other hand, the crossbar saved the Swiss and a couple of other good chances were missed. Both teams guilty of wasting chances in the first half.

The second half started with a bang: Bill Crawley's long kick sailed over the Germand defenders and Christian Schulthess sneaked in from the blind side and somehow, with the help of a German defender and Evan Williams, the ball went in. Christian and Evan are still debating who scored... That sparked GAS into action again. Their forwards worked tirelessly and created a few very good chances, but somehow the last ball was not good enough or it ended up in Bill's gloves. At the other end, the GAS keeper snuffed out a couple of good chances for the Swiss, but it was clearly not a day for the strikers. The best players on each team were no doubt the goalkeepers...

With about three minutes to go Hakim's pass found supersub Christian Buchmann who, after a 360 degree pirouette a la Katharina Witt suddenly found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat. And his shiny boots did not miss: 2:0 - the German policeman Buchmann put the final nail into the GAS coffin. There was no way back for GAS in the last few minutes.

GAS could probably have played another 90 minutes without scoring. It was simply a day where nothing would fall for their strikers. They worked hard, but could not put the finishing touch on the chances. The Swiss, on the other hand, worked hard to defend and got the luck that deserted them two weeks ago.
