Clash of the Titans
A fantastic game for the neutrals and real credit to the level of play in the Cosmo League, unfortunately Latini ended up on the losing side. Nonetheless we demonstrated once again that we have the potential to compete and beat the team that has been dominating the Cosmo League over the past 2 seasons.
Before the start of the game we observed 1 minute silence for Mehdi’s father who passed away recently. Mehdi has a lot of friends on both teams and we all send him and his family our deepest condolences and wish him and his family strength for these difficult times.
To the game – all in all, Latini players did extremely well, our Achilles heel on the day was defending against set pieces. All 3 SCC goals were scored from freekicks crossed into the box/ corners, a real shame in retrospect. At times we played some good football and in general we were able to match and compete with SCC on all parts of the pitch.
We had the first shot on goal from Daniele who struck a shot with venom from outside the box. Scott in the SCC goal could not hold onto it but unfortunately 45degree couldn’t reach the loose ball in time. SCC dominated possession for large parts of the first half, a few good crosses into the box, although I cannot remember any clear cut chances for SCC from open play. Nonetheless as expected they looked dangerous especially coming down the right / left wing. However, we were able to deal with most of the crosses or passes into the last third. As mentioned above our downfall was the fact that we gave away too many easy freekicks and we conceded a goal from a freekick crossed into the box and one from a corner, both poor defending from Latini perspective. On the other side we probably created the 2 best chances in the half from open play, unfortunately both of them fell to me with both shots going just wide. In addition to that a very close offside call that would have seen Dani with a shooting opportunity from the edge of the box.
In the end we went into the half 2 nil down but still well within reaching distance and we knew the next goal would be crucial. We decided to change to a slightly more attacking formation. It worked well and after 15-20minutes we got a goal back with 45 degree from a beautiful worked attack 2-1 and game on.
We felt we would get on even terms and a few good Latini attacks followed. However the final pass, run or shot were not accurate enough or cut off by a SCC defender. On the other side of the pitch SCC started to create chances from open play but good defending, good goalkeeping and a little luck kept the game close. Unfortunately we would once again concede a goal from a corner – an unmarked header, poor from a Latini perspective which made it 3-1. Game over…not for the Latini warriors, we continued to work hard and push forward to close the gap. Barun made a great run and was blocked in the last second by Scott in the SCC goal. Daniele pounced on the loose ball and made it 3-2, game on. An exciting last 5+ minutes but we struggled to create any more notable chances and the game finished 3-2 for SCC.
Overall a fantastic football spectacle from 2 x very competitive teams, great to be a part of it. From a Latini perspective a bit more maturity and composure seems to be all that is lacking to finish on the winning side of this fixture in the future. We will definitely need to defend better on set pieces and freekicks, all 3 SCC goals were scored from set pieces. We showed SCC too much respect for large parts of the first half and subsequently gave them too much possession. Apart from that we were able to compete with SCC across the pitch. Our defenders were strong and in general were able to deal with SCC forwards and attacks, our midfield covered a lot of ground and set up some nice attacking moves, both our strikers scored on the day and looked dangerous when they had the ball at their feet. All in all a good Latini performance, and no doubt a chance for us to change the outcome in the future ‘clash of the titans’ games…
MOM - tough one, it will go to our keeper Cuong for keeping us close, especially in 2nd half when SCC created a few chances.
Congratulations to SCC, they played a good game and it has been great competition and a real highlight to play against them twice in the last 2months. Next season we will end up on the winning side of this fixture :)
Referee – tough game as usual with both teams competing without holding back but generally think Brad had a good game, linesmen average.
Final note: It is a real pleasure to be part of this Latini team. The level of play, the commitment, attitude of the players, the fun on and off the pitch is a real highlight to life in Singapore. In addition to that we have been playing some very good football this season and in our last 2 meetings with SCC will feel that we should have gotten something from these games. Now we need to ensure to show the same desire, passion and commitment on the pitch for the last 5 games and we could stand a good chance of finishing 2nd or 3rd…forza en onore
