Injury time equalizer to maintain unbeaten start
3pm Kick-off always seems to ensure extremely warm conditions and this week was no different. Singapore Sports School was the venue for another dramatic encounter against Latini.
After briefing the stand-in ref on the cosmoleague rules, we were all set to go. Due to the absent of a few players we had to shuffle a bit around, but our squad was still full of confidence.
We started the game brightly and our 4-3-3 always kept the Latini defense busy. Rasmus got an early one-on-one with the keeper after a Tommie flick-on, but his finish unfortunately went wide. We also had good long range shot from Peter DT, which rattled the crossbar. Both teams played a direct style of football and none really managed to control the game. Unfortunately this style also drained the energy of most players due to the sauna-like conditions.
We got the opener after some 30 mins, as Rasmus Bach made it 3 goals for the season. Rasmus played a through pass to Tommie, who was challenged by a defender and the onrushing goalkeeper. The tumble resulted in a loose ball, which Rasmus converted brilliantly with his left foot. 1-0 Vikings and looking good for the lead. Unfortunately Latini managed to score the equalizer on the stroke of half-time. A corner was not cleared properly and after a few weak blocks, the ball suddenly felt nicely for a Latini player, who stroke the ball very well to make it 1-1.
We played a decent first half and were confident that we could grab the 3 points in the second half. Latini opened the second half well, while we started to look more tired. We made a few changes early on, as the heat had drained the energy of several players. This brought some fresh energy to our team, but also seemed to disturb our organization on the pitch. Latini eventually took the lead from a counter-attack were their right-back made a good run past several Vikings, before he found a Latini striker unmarked at the back post. 1-2.
It turned out to be a very dramatic second half as two latini players deservedly saw red with 25 minutes remaining. 1st incident was their striker, who after a tackling deliberately kicked our player. Nice to see that the Ref corresponded with his linesman and made the correct decision to dismiss the Latini striker.
Shortly after they got another straight red after a tumble in the Latini penalty area. A player from each team argued about a Latini free-kick and the Latini captain lost his temper and ended up kicking the Vikings player from behind. It has to be said that our player intimidated the Latini captain. Correctly the Latini player was sent off, while our player got away with a yellow card.
This meant that it was 9 agaist 11 for 25 minutes, which should give us plenty of opportunities to win the match. Unfortunately we couldnt get our passing game going and we only managed a few long range shots. On top of that Latini had several major chances on counter-attacks were they should have sealed the deal.
Instead we got the equalizer just before the final whistle, as we finally hit the target from a long range shot. Elbos beautiful strike got deflected of a Latini player, which left the keeper with no chance. Very fortunate for us after a very poor second half display.
We can count ourselves lucky with 1 point and Im sure Latini felt they should have won.
There were good performances from the likes of Elbo and Naoki, but several players (including myself) have to step it up for next weeks match against Nippon. But I'm sure we will be ready for the challenge.
Thanks to Latini for another dramatic match and thanks to the refs for standing in.
