Vikings win through penalty
n

The first match of the new decade started off well for the Dutch. A failed goal attempt by the Vikings triggered a Dutch counter, in which Martijn smoothly found Daniel who did not hesitate and beautifully converted the 1-0.

n

This woke up the Vikings and more pressure was put on the Dutch defense who held up admirably. Across the field duels became more manly, but despite the sometimes passionate protests from players for more corrective action, the referee remained well in control without hijacking the game. Just before the break and after having prevailed earlier in many man-to-man battles, Rogier had to witness his opponent score the deserved 1-1.

n

With the icicles still on his nose, Philip reinforced the Dutch squad in the second half. Dspite the large distance in the league table both teams were a good match for each other, although the Dutch did not manage to create a lot of goal opportunities. A 1-1 would have best reflected the mutual team strengths on this Saturday, if only the Vikings' zealous number 15 would not have managed to arrange a penalty, and clearly the Vikings know what to do with such opportunities: 1-2. Even 5 Stella pints later, the Dutch could not agree amongst themselves whether or not this penalty was a justified one.

n

Thanks to the Vikings for a tough yet fair game and we wish their two injured players a speedy recovery. Man of the match could have been Gavin, who ruled the midfield, but is Tommy for his various inimitable saves in the second half.
