Disastrous first 30 minutes seals fate of the Dutch
After last week’s match the Dutch were more than ever determined to bring home three points. Based on the ranking we expected to have a good chance to do so. Unfortunately, this feeling turned out to be completely misplaced (a bit of historical understanding would have temopered this expectation in advance any way, as in the last three seasons we have never been able to get points against the Lions)...
Match kicked-off at 5pm on a tough and wet pitch. Weather was fair though and not as hot as it used to be during the previous games. We started with a 4-4-2 formation with Arjan and Gavin playing in the center and Gijs and Rogier completing the defense at the flanks. In the first part of the match the defense stood well and although the Lions took an early upperhand at midfield Marco wasn’t really tested, except for one occasion when he made a good save on the ground and the ball eventually hit the outside of the post. Our midfield however, with from left to right, Jasper, Winnie, Jacco and Jamie, was struggling on the tough pitch against the intelligent moving and strong passing opponent’s midfield.
This turned out to be key to what could easily be called the most disastrous 20 minutes in Dutch Cosmoleague history (at least this season…). Five goals in a period of twenty minutes, with all five goals very similar in execution. How were these goals scored? Here’s the description of the ‘average’ goal: the ball was brought into our box, where although Marco or one of our defenders would be able to clear it, it just didn’t happen fiercely enough. Then just outside the box an opponent was waiting freely to receive the ball, was offered ample time by our midfielders to aim and pull the trigger to slot it home from 20-25 meters. It must be said, the shots were very well placed, but then again, we should have never given the opponent that much time to aim. 0-5 and still 15 minutes to play in the first half. On a positive note: the last 15 minutes of the first half we played quite well and we managed to end this half with 0-6.
Second half showed better football from our side, especially with the experience and aggression of Rene and Erik brought on to the pitch. The match was more balanced and we succeeded in offering the Lions more of an opposition. Unfortunately two more goals sealed our fate of the second half: a well-taken free-kick touched by Marco, but ending up just inside the post was the seventh; a great individual effort by one of the Lions’ subs was the eights.
All in all a very bad result for the Dutch. Though we didn’t play that bad, we should have been much more aggressive on the ball. Coming Saturday we will play against the leader of the competition and it will be even more necessary to bring all the drive, passion, dedication, devotion and commitment we have to the pitch!
