Following the lesson last week from Casuals, this week saw a different team and different playing conditions but the same result against the SCC. The surface was in good condition at Dempsey and with the earlier rain the pitch had a nice slick surface to it which leant itself to passing football as long as the first touch was there.
30 mins into the first half and the score was 0-0 with the Hibs defense restricting the SCC to long range efforts and a few headed chances from corners. John in goal for Burkey this week pulled off some fantastic saves and was making sure to get his body behind the ball as it zipped off the surface. The lads battled hard but struggled to keep hold of position when we did get the ball as the SCC closed down very quickly in attack and midfield. Just after the half way mark though the SCC got the breakthrough which skidded into the bottom corner (and through the net to the confusion of the fans on the touchline). This was when the Hibs needed to ensure we kept it tight going into halftime and kept ourselves in the game. Unfortunately this didn’t happen as we tried to play football out of defense only for the SCC to poach the ball and put the game to bed with 2 more goals – 3-0 at Halftime.
nThe team talk at half time was around playing the second half and trying to win that, looking to hold possession more, create some chances for ourselves and work on our heading in defending set pieces. Whilst we did create a couple of chances, with Bastian moving upfront and creating a good chance with another bombarding run which ended up hitting the crossbar, it was not to be and the SCC rolled the changes but kept the pressure up and managed to match the first half scoreline of 3-0, overall 6-0.
A solid game from the SCC and the Hibs again need to take some lessons out of it about how to keep the ball (more composure when we have it) and hopefully get some players back fit & available as the squad has been depleted for the 2 hardest games of the season so far. Some good work upfront from Adib and Clarky closing down the backline and doing their best to work with limited ball. Kai Dick worked hard in a difficult match to make his full debut in for the Hibs but Man of the match this week goes to Gary in centre mid who (along with Glenn) did a lot of unsung work to break the play up and track the wave of players coming through from the midfield.
Thanks to the SCC for a good game, the officials performance was OK but by no means a good performance and had the match been closer may have caused a few more issues.
