The Stars started with Rene in goal, the 4 in the back were Michel Herrmann, Dennis Mecklenburg, Mihael Lerotic, and Rino Binder. In front of the defense we played with 5 in the midfield to keep the space against SCC tight. The chosen ones were (from left to right), Denis Thun, Matthias Bertl, Michael Klemm, Thomas Berner and Cyrill Binder leaving our star striker Volker upfront.
Joerg’s battle-plan to keep the defense tight and score on a counter attack worked superbly against a SCC squad who were not able to create ideas to overcome the GAS defense in the first half of the game. Usually such sentences would nicely fit the storyboard if we would have been up 2 goals in the first half but unfortunately the storyboard is a slight different one. It is true that the Germans played every good game and that everyone stuck to the tactics and moreover that everyone fought at its best. It is true that we kept the game tight in the defense not allowing SCC to create allot of chances in the first half and it is true that the Germans scored 2 on counter attacks. However, SCC was still able to score 3 goals in the first half.
The scoring started with a great counter attack by the Germans when Michael Klemm fired a spectacular shot in the top right corner of the SCC goal after a stunning diagonal pass by Cyrill from the right. SCC then scored a somehow lucky goal when Rene underestimated a shot onto his goal. To his and our surprise “the hammer” send by one of SCC players found its way into our net and it was 1- 1. No heads went down and the Germans continued playing their game. This goal however, somehow started 10 minutes of the game in which each team gave presents to other team. First, it were the Germans again who played a nice pass to a SCC striker 20 meters from the goal. Hutcheon converted the present cold blooded. Then it was the SCC defense playing a lovely through-ball to Denis Thun, who was pumping for air in the SCC half. Denis Thun also did no mistake and converted the SCC present in style. Near the end of the first half it was SCC again to score their third, when a high ball got deflected by Franz Beckenbauer and fell into Hutcheon path who scored from 16 meters with a hard shot.
So it was 3-2 SCC leading at half time. The half time talk then concentrated on avoiding individual mistakes. We knew the game was not over for us and from the game we played in the first half, we also knew that we can score and get something out of it. Although we were behind, we deserved a draw.
The second half then started slower, with the Germans sitting deep and waiting for their chances. SCC created 2 - 3 chances which were nicely saved by Rene. On our side, Michael Klemm had a number of chances to convert and also had Denis Thun. Both however, failed to score and we had to wait until the dying minutes of the game when our striker Volle-Volker headed home from very close range - I believe he must have stood 1 meter from the goal line when he scored. SCC claimed infringement of the goalie, which I did not see from my position at the sideline. Volker is a tall chap maybe he was just too tall for the SCC keeper. Given a clear penalty in the first half which was not given by Ganesan, I do believe the goal was ok and the result reflects the game. In the middle of the second half Markus Dolenga came on for Matthias, and Calvin replaced Michel Hermann. Our goalie Zafer the cat, then had the chance to test his fitness with 10 minutes to play and Florian Schmidt replaced Mihael who injured himself during a one on one.
Congratulations to SCC for winning the league - well deserved lads. Thanks for the fair game and for helping us with getting some drinks after the game.
M-O-M goes to Thomas Berner who played a superb game. Given his incredible speed and technique, SCC was not able to confine him in the center of the field. He calmly controlled our game and played fantastic passes on our counter attacks.
Thanks guys,
Sascha
