Brewerkz pressed on. We created some individual chances here and there but nothing much to trouble the Ubin keeper and nothing much to write about really
Ubin did not create any clear cut chances. But 2 goals from 2 mistakes meant that they were accepting our gifts with open arms. On our part, apart from the 2 mistakes, our defenders were coping well with their main threats. .
Julien in particular was having a good game and was frustrating the striker by winning almost every ball. On one such occasion, the ball broke free after Julien intercepted the first pass. The striker was first to the second ball with Julien very close behind. As he stretched those long legs of his and nipped the ball away for a second time, the very frustrated Ubin striker threw an elbow which caught him above the eye. Player down with a head injury but the referee plays on.
Eventually we get possession and put the ball out. There is a 'free flow' of blood pouring from his eye and Julien will have to spend the rest of his evening in the ER- outcome was 7 stitches and out for 2 weeks. Amazingly, for the second week in a row there was no action from the referee for an elbow to the face. Anyway we move along..... because that's what we do when we can't do anything else, although we continue to moan about it.
Substitution had to be made and Anthony was thrown into the deep end for his debut. Not playing in his most natural position but he was in the right position to react first to a cross from Stuart with an opportunistic strike and it was 2-1 going into the break.
We were eager to get back out and turn things around in the second half. We had a lot of the possession and did most of the attacking. Ubin had a few good counter attacks but we dealt well with most of them. We threw everything into attack but failed to get the equaliser. Ubin defended very well and their midfielders worked tirelessly to keep us at bay. Eventually a red card was all we had to show for our efforts on the day. Jesse dismissed for finally retaliating after being hacked to the ground on various occasions since coming on.
We have to say that Ubin were were effective and they got the job done.
As for Brewerkz, we are left to reflect on our performance. Probably the manager on the day has to take some responsibility for a few tactical mistakes. Square pegs in round holes do not help the cause and it's always easier to speak on hindsight,-but we learn from our mistakes... I hope
Referee for the day... hmm what can I say? Nothing much really since I have been told that I'm not allowed to complain about the referee via the match report. So if Andrew will allow me to borrow some of his words, I will ask you to refer to Hotspurs match report from last week which probably sums up how many of us feel but are unable to express with such eloquence.
We entertain the in-form Hotspurs next weekend. We will be looking to pick up the pieces and give a good account of ourselves. Hopefully the match report will be about goals, good football and an enjoyable Saturday afternoon and not about the refereeing.
