Game - Set - Match, Pulau Ubin
A real tennis result at this 3pm kick off on a windy Japanese Sports Association. Definitely a good day for the forwards of both teams, and the neutral spectators (which were practically zero, as both teams had a good turnout of family, friends and injured players watching from the sideline). Ubin having 1 late drop-out, 2 no-shows, and 4 injured/sick players watching from the sideline, were still able to field a strong team and 2 subs plus reserve goalie.

Captain Mike ??loosing? the toss and Ubin had to play against the strong head wind in first half. However, it was lack of concentration and commitment to put in a tackle that saw a German midfielder stride pass 3 Ubin players before taking a well placed shot from 18 yards that sneaked on the inside of Amin??s near post. The game was only 2 minutes old. It didn??t take more than a minute before the books were balanced after some nice passing game from Ubin, involving Jamie, Sidney and Dave finishing well from 6 yards out.

During the next 30 minutes Ubin played some excellent football, often starting from the back with Jamie and Sidney pushing on the wing and overlaps by the fullbacks, Petter and Gregg J. Moose and Danny also had good control of the midfield and spreading the ball nicely around. The reward came through two more goals inside the first 15, courtesy of Anders (back after 2 weekends away) and Dave with a well-placed header. Ubin also had several chances to put this game beyond doubt during this period, including a nice volley from Sidney (unfortunately a few inches above the cross bar and being called off for offside) and Dave putting it a yard wide.

The last 15 minutes off first half, Ubin did a classic error of letting the foot of the gas and some untidy defensive play saw the Germans pull back the 2 goal advantage. 3-3 at half time.

Half time team talk was about getting back into the rhythm we had during the first 30 minutes and continue playing the ball on the deck, knowing we have excellent players with the ball. All needed was to win the second half. Nothing more, nothing less. Ubin??s play in second half started brightly, but was penalized by a German break down leading to their fourth goal.

Anders getting his second goal five minutes later, and the game is yet again all even. But this was a game with the forwards having a field day, and another strong individual performance by the German attacker and they had got the fifth of the day. A 100% efficiency for the Germans on their second half chances so far.

It took some time before Ubin got the equaliser, but it was definitely the charging team (which can be illustrated by about 15-2 in corner kicks). However, the Germans were still causing danger on the break and some excellent saves by a good Amin on one-on-one situations kept Ubin within distance of a result. The fifth Ubin goal came with 10-15 minutes to go, from a free kick 35 yards out. Even without the same strong wind, Anders had a sweat struck on the ball and the rather un-orthodox German goalie fumbled the ball in the net. Hat-trick for Anders and 5-5 on the score sheet.

From this point onward it was a question of when, rather than if, Ubin would get the winner. The Germans defence and goalie trying their best to let time run, on every stop in play. But with the German goalie getting tired, it was all about putting the ball inside the 6-yard box. Zul (a 60 minute substitute for Sidney) getting the winner from a cross into the box which Santa Claus aka German goalie let pass him, with 2 minutes from full time.

The game ebbed out after the Germans had a last attempt at goal which Amin did well to prevent. Several good performances today by the Ubin players, including excellent work rate and 2 nice goals by Dave and a hat-trick by Anders. But my little mini-jury (consisting of only myself and the computer) gives the Man of the Match award to Amin, despite 5 balls in the net.
