A close encounter
A game that saw 1st vs 2nd in the league, albeit with SCC already well clear in 1st position. This was a game we wanted to win and we showed it for 90min on the pitch. Overall Latini players managed to match and compete with SCC in all departments across the pitch. Knowing SCC we decided to play a slightly more defensive formation. It worked well to contain any SCC threat but the downside was that we struggled to support our 2 strikers and were very limited in creating chances upfront. Unfortunately our stand in keeper did not show up for the match, so 2 min before kickoff Rob Price went in goal. He played a fantastic game between the posts.
The first half saw SCC dominate possesion and having a few half chances, however, we played very compact and physical at the back and in return it meant that there were no easy chances for SCC. The game was very physical and no team held back in their challenges, a few tough challenges on the pitch on both sides. We always looked dangerous on the counter attack and played some good football when coming down the wings but the final pass was always slightly off or we lacked a little more support from midfield when moving forward. Nonetheless overall the game plan seemed to work with SCC really limited to half chances.
2nd half game plan was to contain SCC for a further 15 minutes and than we would look at pushing more players forward for the winner. 2nd half started well for us, we looked better on the ball and possession was now more evenly balanced. We created chances none better than when Daniele won a header from a freekick and Angel picked up the flick on and is through on goal, he gets taken out by a challenge from the SCC defender the referee blows for a freekick...however, the linesman decides our player came from offside...a very late flag and a very dodgy decision with Angel quite clearly starting from an onside position, unfortunately there were a number of poor offside decisions on both sides for both teams.
SCC got their goal a little fortunate whilst Latini struggled to clear the ball a few times and it was poked through to the run of SCC striker whose shot came off the post and into the back of the Latini net.
This seemed to motivate us even more, and from here on in we looked more confident going forward and played some very good football through midfield. We created a few more chances and the SCC goalie made 1 or 2 good saves, finally we managed to score a goal, unfortunately it was dissallowed, for what we are not sure and even a few of the SCC players later commented that they were not sure why the goal was dissallowed but happy and lucky it was. The game ended and we lost 1-0.
All in all it was a great game from the entire Latini squad who competed and matched SCC in all departments on the pitch, with our 1st choice keeper and top scorer missing for this game, spirits are extremely high in the Latini camp for a good result in the Cup Semi Final SCC v Latini on 17 April!
Man of the match really has a number of contenders, definetly the entire defence deserves a big mentioned for being able to contain and deal with SCC attacking threat throughout the game, an unfortunate goal was the only mistake. Gob Price deserve a huge mention for standing in as keeper and playing a very good game between the posts, we may have yet found his best position. Benji for an outstanding game in midfield that limited the usually threatening SCC midfielders from any chances throughout the game. Fafa, Daniele, Angel for their hard work but my man of the match will have to go to Gaetan for his performance and leadership on the pitch, fighting, working, hassling and overall winning all his challenges on the pitch. He exemplified the Latini spirit on the day which was to fight work and run tirelessly.
Referee had a very difficult game, it was very physical with the occasional poorly timed challenges on both sides (slightly more from Latini) and although i disagree with a few decisions made, I must say that he had controlled the game and did well. Unfortunatley the linesmen did not have the best of days.
Heads up Latini if we perform and fight in this fashion for the rest of the season we will get the results we need. On a seperate note we were lucky that the other teams behind us also dropped points and we remain in 2nd position. However the competition for 2,3 and 4 place looks to be very tight this year, basically we have to win all remaining games...come on Latini.
