Hibs Get Away with it !
A leaden footed performance from the Hibs with a number of players playing well below their own high standards and labouring in the heat.
Hibs deservedly went into a quick 1-0 lead with Adib again showing composure in front of goal by turning in a lovely cross. Unfortunately our industrious German machine, Bastian, was hacked down after 20 mins and had to limp off with a damaged ankle. This seemed to stall the momentum that Hibs had created after scoring early.
Although things could have been alot different if a Hibs disallowed 'goal' had been properly allowed to stand (how can we foul a keeper when none of our players are near him?) and a 'penalty' that inexplicably not given. The foul on Hibs striker was approx 1.5 metres inside the penalty area and a free kick was awarded 0.25m outside of the penalty area. Most players (from both sides) had already turned away from where the foul was committed and were preparing for a penalty kick to be taken when the referee awaded the free kick. Amazing.
This seemed to distract the Hibs and encouraged the Gaulois who defended resolutely but who never really threatened the Hibs defence.
The rest of the half saw lots of promising play from Hibs but uncharacteristic mistakes were being made too often and the remainder of the half petered out. The only other stand-out moment from the first half was Abid throwing up behind a tree after 30 mins and immediately subbing himself.
Half time : 1-0 to Hibs.
Second half, the Hibs game plan was to come out looking for the elusive 2nd goal that we felt would kill off the game. Instead it was the Gaulois who re-started brighter and their toils were rewarded after we needlessly gave away possession and their left winger got behind the Hibs defence and slung in a high looping cross for their striker to head in at the far post.
The goal seemed to stir Hibs into action and then followed our best period of the second half and we continued to push forward. Another Hibs 'goal' was disallowed which we felt was a tad harsh but by now we were getting used to this referee's bizarre decisions. Eventually the goal came in the unlikeliest way, directly from a corner kick from Mr. Corner. 2-1 to Hibs. At that stage in the game I think Hibs deserved to be leading the game.
But the last 20 mins consisted of the Fench pushing forward more and more and the tired and hungover Hibs dug deep and defended manfully. Hibs hung onto the 2-1 lead to register a victory that they barely deserved.
But all credit must be given to the French who i think will feel they were unlucky not to get at least a draw after their lively 2nd half performance. But it could have been very different if two refereeing decisions had been different in the first half. If the disallowed goal had been given and a penalty awarded in the first half then it could have been 3-0 and the game would have been out of reach of the French. But it wasn't to be and the French fought back and almost got something from the game.
The Hibs need to learn that we need to be at peak performance to be competitive in the Cosmo league. This game was hopefully a lesson learnt I hope.
Hibs now stretch their unbeaten run to 5 games (4 wins and one draw) and we move 2 places up in the league table into 9th place courtesy of Ubin and Vikings being involved in Cup/Plate action.
Next up, the Vikings. Clear heads and fresh legs will definitely be needed for this encounter.
