Vikings win battle for 6th place
In a competitive game at SJI Vikings deservedly get the double over the Swiss.

The first 20 minutes were evenly balanced but the Swiss looked comfortable building on their come-from-behind win against Ubin last week. Two good chances following corner kicks were wasted (yes, I am guilty as charged!) and Heinz Braegger's shot went inches wide. Swiss could easily have been two up by the time Vikings got into their swing. But when Vikings get going, they are a great team with crisp passing and good use of the flanks. It was from such a build up with a clever pass into the back of the defender that the forward pulled the ball back for the striker to have the easy tap in. Only a few minutes later a free kick is awarded to Vikings and the conversion was as good as you will see all season: a delightful chip into the top right hand corner. Chapeau! That double knock derailed the Swiss and Tommy was soon scoring a third, again getting in behind the defender from the blind side. 3:0 at the break Vikings.

The Swiss half time talk was that there was still something in this game - if Vikings can score 3 in one half we can do that, too! Heinz Steinegger had landed at Changi airport from Zurich at 4.45 pm and came straight to the pitch to join for the second half. And his inclusion made a big difference. The Swiss seemed to believe in themselves again and when Christian Schulthess scored after a neat ball from Normal Burzle we were back in the game. Heinz Steinegger shortly afterwards reduced the deficit when he dispatched a great pass from Mattia Garatti. 3:2 and Swiss on the rise! At that moment I would have put my money on the Swiss to complete the comeback, but the Vikings had other plans.

A totally harmless infringment in the Swiss penalty box was punished with a penalty kick. Hakim's shoelaces must have pushed the forward down...contact was minimal and if these penalties are awarded then you would have to give a penalty on each and every corner kick - there is a lot more pushing going on then. To add insult to injury the referree cautioned Hakim. I believe that the rules say that a yellow card is given if the attacking player is deprived of a goal scoring opportunity. As the Vikings player was running away from goal that surely was not the case. Tommy calmly put the Vikings 4:2 up. That was it, the last goal for Vikings was cosmetic.

Vikings deserved the 3 points. However, the scoreline flatters Vikings and the Swiss should overall have done better. It's not good enough to play a good first 20 minutes and then again about 20 to 30 minutes in the second half. A cosmo league game lasts 90 minutes and commitment and passion is required for the full duration of the game.

The game was competitive and had in the second half a few (very) late challenges. The referee should have stepped in earlier with yellow cards to stop this. His first yellow card was for the penalty incident described above...

We look forward to our next game with the Vikings next season, hopefully we can then get something out of it....
