Another nailbiter at SJI...
The Swiss make it a bit of a habit to have high scoring games with late drama...However, on this day, there was no reason for drama and the Swiss have only to blame themselves for some tense final minutes.
The long grass at SJI slowed down the game considerably. Swiss took control early in the game and came close on a number of occasions. Freddy Lange had a great chance, Christian Schulthess came close and Norman Buerzle's runs gave the Ubin defense trouble all afternoon. Or at least in the first half. A number of meaty tackles on Norman took the wind out of his sails and he had to go off at half time. But by then one of the Ubin defenders was sent off for chopping him down when he was through on goal. From the resulting free kick the Ubin keeper miraculously kept the ball out. On top of all these chances the Swiss hit the crossbar twice. The only goal of the first half finally came, but totally against the run of play at the other end: the only Ubin shot on goal in the first half found the back of the net. A screamer from 25 metres out! 0:1 Ubin at the break.
Stand-in coach Kofi had to make two substitutions at the break, but that did not seem to slow down the Swiss too much. The pressure finally paid off when Thomas Franz scored from an impossible angle. Only two minutes later Christian Schulthess finished off a sleek Swiss move with one of his trade mark runs. Shortly afterwards, Ubin was reduced to nine men, when their goalkeeper stopped a goal bound shot outside the box with his hands. Ubin then put up a great fight.and never gave up. Swiss hit the post again and had many other chances to seal the victory. But it needed sub goalkeeper Ridwan to come on to get a third for the Swiss with 3 minutes to go. Unbvelievably, Ubin scored diretly from the kick off and another couple of tense moments for the Swiss.
On the positive side is that the Swiss came from behind to get full points. However, we need far too many chances to score. We could have had six in the first half already!
Now for a cracking game against Vikings next week!
