Two late goals stun Vikings!!
3pm kick-off @ Dempsey and conditions were as warm as ever. Prior to the match Hotspurs requested a 2min water break after 20min to apply, which we obviously acknowledged due to the extremely warm weather.
We were really struggling to put out a team and had no less than 4 debutants in our squad and our 3 vikings legends (mounting some 150years of experience between them) have also forced themselves into the starting line-up. Eivin, Franner & Buck all did a very good job under these extreme conditions.
As Vikings we are always keen on giving it a go regardless of our team, as you have to play with whats available and no point whining about missing players.
Both teams started the match in the usual competitive Cosmoleague spirit and there were a few minor chances in both ends. Despite the warm weather Esad was handed "a raincoat" from vikings - courtesy of Anders who played a very good match in a new position. Our Italian debutant Eddy was lurking on the edge of offside all the time and in the best Inzaghi style he was caught offside some 25 times in the first 45 minutes :-).
We got the opening goal from a rather bizarre situation, as a loose ball just outside the box was challenged by Eivin, Hotspurs defender and their stand-in keeper Binns. Somehow they all tackled each other and the ball felt for a totally unmarked Eddy, who easily sidefooted the ball into the empty net. 1-0 Vikings.
We continued to fight throughout the match and we really have to give credit to the entire team. Hotspurs looked dangerous when going forward on their wings and created some good chances on that account. Our defense was looking very comfortable, but Hotspurs suddenly got their equalizer as a pin-point cross found Esad inside the box and of course his header was outside the reach of our tall goalkeeper Martin. 1-1 at Half-time.
Second half kicked off and the introduction of Casper gave us more options on the final third of the pitch. We had a few chances to score, but it wasn't major chances. Midway through the second half we went in front, as Tommie passed a few Hotspurs players before dribbling past GK Binns and kicked it into the empty net. Important goal and a good chance to grab all three points in this one. For the remainder of the game it was Hotspurs in possession, but Vikings creating the major chances from counter-attacks. We honestly had so many chances to score the decisive 3-1 goal. Ranck almost reached a Tommie cross inside the box, Brenden was one-on-one with GK Binns on two occasions, Casper was clean through with the keeper and had plenty of time (maybe that was the problem), but he failed to decide what to do and was eventually tackled.
Our defense were still strong and Jesper, Dennis & Anders deserve a lot of credit. Hotspurs didnt look like scoring and we were fighting our way to a good win. Hotspurs even had a man sent off for a dangerous challenge, But.... 10 minutes from time a corner was only cleared to outside our box and out of nothing a Hotspurs defender hit an unstoppable shot and it was 2-2. A major blow as we should have scored to 3-1 and was fighting to keep Hotspurs away.
Our stamina was running out and Hotspurs secured their win with a 3-2 goal some 5 minutes from time. We almost got an equalizer in stoppage time, but Tommie's freekick was denied by the post.
It was disappointing to leave the pitch without any points, but all our debutants and "old men" did very well and worked impressively hard throughout the match. It's typical in football, if you don't convert your chances, you'll get punished. And we surely did.
Great match from all our players and thanks to Hotspurs for a fair competitive match.
All the best in your Cup Final next week, there will surely be a few Vikings in the stands.
Cheers,
Thomas Sorensen
