A Day to Forget
When you look at your availability for the weekend and you see 13 first team regulars listed as 'absent' then you know that its going to be an unusual day. Hong Kong Rugby 7's, injuries and business trips took their toll this week as Tunners battled to get a squad together.
As it turned out on the day we had a full compliment of 16 players arrive at Dempsey for the Plate clash with high-flyers Hotspurs. Worryingly, our opponents seemed to be at full strength and looked relaxed before the game, whilst our assembled squad were introducing themselves to each other and trying to remember each other's names.
In total, 4 players were promoted from the Hibs Utd squad and 5 Hibs FC debut caps were handed out. one plus point being that the average age of the squad looked at its lowest ever.
Whilst our guys were still trying to remember each others names, Hotspurs crashed in 3 goals inside the first 15 mins, including a tidy brace from the irrepressable Esad. Hotspurs looked on top of their game and played some lovely fluid football and Hibs were left chasing shadows. After weathering the initial storm the valiant Hibs to their credit then steadied the ship and 3-0 was the scoreline at half time and Hibs had been competing much better for the 20 minutes prior to the break.
The least said about the 2nd half the better. Fresh legs were introduced throughout the second half. What you don't need when you are 5-0 down is for one of your players to be injured after you have made yr last substitution. So it was, and Hibs effectively played the with ten men for the last 25 mins as Amod hobbled around and did the best he could on one leg.
Highlights - yes, every cloud has a silver lining ! Lucas came off the bench and produced an explosive 2nd half performance. If only he could arrive on time for a game he might get to start a game ! An impressive debut from Duncan up front who provided some good touches but his partnership with Dennis will clearly take a bit of time to gel. Good to see Tom C taking part in two Cosmo games on the trot, a feat he's not managed since 30 August '08, without needing to be driven to the the nearest hospital!!
Well done to Hotspurs and best of luck to them for their upcoming Plate matches. On Saturday's form then i'm sure they will win the Plate without too many problems.
For the Hibs, it is back to the drawing board. But a big thanks to the whole squad who toiled without any reward to show for it especially our reserves who stepped up and also to the hastily signed up debutants.
The next game is against Holland in the league and the manager expects a much better performance or else he will be rummaging around for the axe !
