Three Points for Ubin

Perfect conditions for this match up in Woodlands, with overcast skies and a strong breeze. Ubin re-shuffled their line-up, switching to 3 at the back, packing the midfield and opting to start with veteran Tony leading the line up front. (The prospect of 90 minutes on the Marsiling astroturf clearly had an effect on Tony as, in a touching moment prior to kick off, he asked Moose to marry him. For the record, Moose kept the ring but Tony is still waiting on an answer).

Ubin were straight into their stride, making the most of an early flurry of free kicks and corners to exert some sustained pressure. A mix-up in the OG defence from a throw-in saw the ball fall at the feet of Tony and he unleashed a clinical toe poke into the bottom corner. 1-0 Ubin after just 5 minutes.

The next 35 minutes was competitive with plenty of chances but, somehow, no more goals. Joel's "looping Delap" throws were causing problems and a congested midfield battle was punctuated by some fantastic crosses from Ubin widemen Jamie and Petter. The OG centre forward threatened the Ubin goal at times, holding the ball up well before shooting, forcing some last ditch blocks from Jenko and sharp saves from Amin. Some well-worked passing moves saw Ubin carve out several clear chances but the finishing touch was not quite there, with the hard-working Brennan particularly profligate in front of goal.

It was with some relief that Stian's speculative free kick into the area went in on 40 minutes. His shot was well struck into a packed box, but missed everyone on its way through into the bottom right hand corner. 2-0 Ubin. Brennan had yet another chance to open his account moments later with a point blank header from Petter's cross but it was well-saved. Right on half-time, an OG attack resulted in their centre forward racing clear towards the Ubin goal. Amin came rushing out confidently from his area to clear as he has done several times over recent games, but missed his block allowing the opposition player to round him and slot home coolly. 2-1 Ubin and a wake-up call on half-time to remind the men in black that sustained pressure and shots count for nothing if you don't put the ball in the net.

The second half saw Ubin wobbling for the first 10 minutes before consolidating their hold on the game. Stian rattled the cross bar from another strong freekick and Jamie's shot resulted in a save that the tv cameras would have loved, before Ben was introduced in place of Matt H. A second inspired substitution from the stand-in management team saw David replace the toiling Tony and it was minutes before a brave header from Brennan put David in on goal for a calm finish. 3-1 Ubin.

Ubin wrapped up the 3 points 5 minutes later as a Brennan cutback saw the onrushing Danny pickup the ball on the edge of the area and crash the ball home. Fitting reward for another Barry Ferguson-like display from Ubin's skipper. 4-1 Ubin.

Aside from an exchange of handbags after the goal, the last 20 minutes was relatively uneventful. David's contribution ended early with a painful looking twisted ankle (treated with some $2.60 frozen chipolatas from the garage), allowing Jamie H to come on. Ubin's final substitute managed to get the ball in the net in the last few minutes, with a well-executed glancing header...but the referee had seen a foul in the build-up and the goal was ruled out.

A good day at the office for Ubin resulting in some long overdue points. Thanks to the French for a good game.
