Casuals Extend Winning Run
When Casuals were beaten by the Germans at the beginning of November, it marked the beginning of a slump in form that saw the reds lose three times in the following eight games. Fortunately, the tide has been reversed in recent weeks and Saturday gave Casuals the opportunity to exact some revenge on the team that precipitated the slide.
The pitch at ITE Tampines was in excellent condition for a passing game which Casuals attempted with mixed success in the early stages. The compact German midfield and defence meant the central areas were tight and consequently Casuals had more luck with balls over the top. Paul made the most of space created by the forwards going short and, but for a series of close offside calls, could have been clean through on a number of occasions.
After ten minutes, persistent Casuals pressure paid off when Gordy threaded a through ball towards the area for Tom to run onto and lift over the onrushing German keeper. The second followed shortly after, when a pass forward was misjudged by the goalie leaving Tom to finish into an empty net. Apologies for not remembering who knocked it through but it may well have been Gordon again.
The Germans meanwhile were attempting to play some neat football and on occasion managed to feed their wide men, however, Casuals' defence stood firm and Marc in goal was not seriously troubled.
The game continued in the same vein into the second half and it was not long before Casuals added a third. A long pass forward slipped off the head of our bald guy in midfield leaving Gordon to outpace the German defence and finish clinically.
Lack of discipline and complacency then allowed the Germans to pull one back before Marc S came on to finish the Casuals scoring in style. Receiving the ball in his own half, he cut across from the right towards the German penalty area before firing over the keeper into the roof of the goal.
With the final kick of the game the Germans found the net once more resulting in the reversal of November's score.
Overall a good win for the Casuals and, despite a few moments of excitement from both sides, played in good spirit. Some of the decisions made by the referee even had both teams laughing together - not an easy feat when your audience is made up of Germans and Brits.
