With regard to soccer, the Swiss got off to exactly the opposite start from the previous week - that is being down 1-0 after 2 minutes. This resulted from two sloppy defensive errors - a give away and bad marking. Unfortunately, a few more Swiss defensive errors were coming. The early play was quite even with both teams showing some offensive prowess. For some reason the Vikings were quite content to allow the Swiss left back (Alan) to move forward at will during the early stages. Even one dangerous volley off a sensational cross from Sepp didn't turn on any Viking alerts. Finally at 20 min this Swiss strategy paid off. A free kick from Matt to the Vikings far post was one-timed by Alan beyond the reach of an outstretched keeper, across the goal mouth to young Christian who put it away. 1-1. The Vikings at this point made some tactical changes and traded positions of their two outside wingers - the new guy was following Alan on all his crazy runs. Good adjustment Vikings! The Swiss now were gaining momentum but against the run of play a Vikings forward was brought down in the Swiss box and #10 converted a nice PK. 2-1. This didn't phase the Swiss and play resumed with the ball almost entirely in the Vikings end. In first half injury time a ball that was swarmed by Swiss forwards resulted in a Vikings desperation clear....into their own net. Christian was closest so the peanut gallery gives him credit. Second half started much like the match - a Swiss defensive error (and a possible off sides?) resulting in a Vikings goal in the first 2 min! To make matters worse, soon after the Vikings got a cracker from 20m beating a diving Bill. 4-2 Vikings but the never-quit Swiss kept fighting. At 60 min Thomas got a scrappy goal from 3m and at 75 min Christian received an excellent pass from Matt and delivered an on-the-run far post beauty to complete his hattrick! Jason will be proud of his velcro side kick. In the remaining 15 min the Swiss unfortunately missed 3 wide open chances that likely resulted in loss of sleep for some. So what could be regarding as an excellent 4X comeback can be also regarded as a loss of 2 more Swiss points. In any case, the match was played and refereed well in the true Cosmoleague spirit.
