Out with a bang!
The Swiss knew that OG had a string of good results recently and expected a tough fight. OG did not disappoint and made it very difficult for the Swiss, particularly in the first half, when they defended very well and the Swiss were only able to create half chances, with the exception of a point blank header from Thomas Franz, which the goalkeeper saved brilliantly. At the other end, Nick Hughes had a quiet afternoon in goal. The Swiss had probably 70% of the ball, but as Barcelona knows, this does not count.
No goals in the first half.
The second half continued in the same way: the Swiss attacking and OG looking for the swift counter attack. On 5 minutes the breakthrough: Thomas Franz played a sharp pass to Michel Keiser who calmly finished. That was the breakthrough the Swiss were waiting for. Shortly afterwards, Chris Buchmann made good use of his yellow boots and crosssed the ball for Alain Stroppini to side foot home. 2:0 and it looked pretty much like game over. The French resistance started to dwindle. Alain Stroppini added two more goals for a superb hattrick on the day. OG pulled a goal back, when Nick Hughes went to collect the ball and he claimed he was pushed by the OG forward who calmly put the ball into the empt net. It did not really matter: 4:1 Swiss. Surely a fully deserved victory.
The game was memorable for a few reasons:
1) Nikos showed that not everything Greek is in bad shape. His superb climb to head the ball towards goal was exquisite. He rose at least 2 1/2 inches only to find out that the ball had gone by long ago....He claims that Norman's cross was crap.
2) Thomas Franz played his last game for the club after almost 5 years of excellent service to the team. He captained the team for a couple of seasons and was a key player throughout. We will miss him - not sure whether the referees will miss him, too... He really went out with a bang: his freekick in the 90th minute was sheer class: it went about 15 metres above the goal and about 10 metres wide. The referee showed mercy and immediately whistled for full time.
3) Alain Stroppini also played his last game for the team. He finished off with a brilliant hattrick. Alain needs a half chance to score two goals. Absolutely amazing, and I have no clue who will score the goals next season!
To both Alain and Thomas: a big thank you from the entire team and a very good start back in Switzerland. We will see you in Bangkok for the Easter tournament 2011 (in red shirts).
