Close, but not close enough...
A very good game at SJI, which once again was in pristine condition. Both teams played attacking football and it was end-to-end stuff for much of the 90 minutes. The Swiss will feel that they should have taken something from this game - we haven't been that close to the SCC for a couple of seasons now....
The only blemish on the afternoon (from a Swiss perspective, of course...) is that for the second game in a row we had to concede a goal after the ball had clearly gone out of play for a Swiss throw in. The linesman missed it and the opponent plays to the whistle, ie continues to play (which we would do, too!). Very annoying, but even with that unfortunate decision, we could have gotten a point, in fact, we think we deserved a point. But that, I guess, is the difference between a great team and a good team. The great team wins even if they don't play their best football...
The controversial opening goal (nothing controversial about the penalty!) was quickly followed by a freekick for SCC which surprised the entire Swiss defence and Nahar "I punch you in your face" Daud doubled the lead with a spectacular backheel scissors kick (or whatever that gymnastic exploit can be called....). In previous years, this would have opened the floodgates and Swiss would have imploded. Not today. The reaction was superb. After we had the better chances before SCC scored (Thomas Franz came very close twice) we now put more pressure on the SCC backline. Captain Heinz then decided to lead by example and muscled his way through two defenders before unleashing a shot that found its way into the top corner. Top drawer! And with the right foot, which neutral observers believe is only very rarely used.
Another great chance went by for Swiss to equalize before the break, but with 1:2 down at the break still everything to play for.
The second half was very balanced, but on most occasions the defenders prevailed over the attackers. The closest we came was probably a golden opportunity for Nikos who came on as a sub. However the angle was too tight and he missed. Frantic last minute attempts from the Swiss throwing caution to the wind, but to no avail. SCC had a couple of good chances on the break and could have sealed the match. Tense moments for the SCC backline, but in the end full points to SCC and the Swiss walk away empty handed.
Overall, a very good team performance by the men in white. We had a tough schedule so far and hope to keep the momentum going into the next few games to slowly climb back up the ladder.
The game was played in good spirit, with only one or two players on each side occasionally forgetting the BCL spirit of fairplay. I will not comment about the men in black as the president told us not to use the match reports to vent our frustration. The second para above says enough.
