HFC picking up where they left last season; a good first 60 minutes, no points…
The ’09-’10 Cosmoleague season kicked off with a match against the Vikings at our newly home ground SJI. Facing some personnel issues in the to the match, we were happy to be able to bring enough men to the game. During summer we welcomed some new faces to the team, youngsters Jamie and Philip, as well as ‘veteran’ Stephan, who is said of having played Cosmoleague matches in the previous century. Interim in the goal we welcomed Fred, after being out of circulation for 30 years.

Match started with Vikings taking the upperhand early in the game. Though Fred had to make some good saves, the Dutch defense held strong. In midfield we weren’t able to keep control of the ball to set up proper attacks and hence the Viking keeper was hardly tested during the first 45 minutes. HT: 0-0.

Second half kicked off with a few substitutes coming on; Ed for Fred, Frits as targetman, Jasper on the left wing and Stephan as right midfielder. These changes had a good effect on the team and we were able to test the Viking goalkeeper a few times from long distance. Half way the second half however, just after Vikings brought on some fresh faces, the Dutch defense finally had to bow. A close range shot left Ed with no chance: 0-1. As it was the case often during last year’s season, we found it hard to recuperate from a goal against. More and more duels were lost and the Vikings were able to slot home three more. FT: 0-4.

All in all not a bad match from the Dutch, especially given the long list of absent players. The result however, was poor. Next week we’ll be facing the Germans and we have to make sure to keep up our concentration until the final whistle.
