Big Swiss win over Rangers at the PSA!
In the hours before this 3pm match at the PSA pitch near the Keppel golf course, the sky was full of clouds and the prospects for rain were high. But of course at match-time, the clouds parted and released the full fury of the Singapore sun. This coupled with the biggest pitch amongst all Cosmoleague pitches, the Swiss and Rangers were about to have a tiring affair. When the whistle blew, the Swiss immediately began to take the offensive and challenged every ball 100%. Our forwards Thomas Franz and Martin Stacher worked tirelessly and forced many Ranger defenders/midfielders into bad passes, thus creating dangerous chances. At about the 15 min mark, an Alan Sellinger throw-in near the Rangers corner flag was flicked by Thomas Franz to Jason Eldridge who under pressure placed a delicate cross just beyond the reach of Ranger defenders to Martin Stacher who promptly buried the ball into side-netting. Swiss 1-0. The Swiss kept up the pressure and at the 25 min mark, Heinz Braegger rushed forward from his right back position. Just as everyone thought he would pass, he continued down the line and made a beautiful cross to Matt Schulthess who hit a one-time screamer. Swiss 2-0. For the rest of the half the Swiss continued to pressure while the Rangers couldn't seem to get much going. Second half began and the momentum switched a bit with the Rangers keeping the ball in the Swiss half. But suddenly at the 60 min mark, one of the Rangers forwards delivered a two-handed-neck-level-shove to Heinz Braegger after a seemingly clean tackle. Promptly the Ranger forward was shown the red card and from this moment onward the Rangers could not mount any effective pressure so the Swiss held on for the well earned victory. This was truly a team effort and all Swiss players should be commended for their smart, committed, hard play. Man of the match goes to Jason Eldridge for his enormous work ethic in central midfield under very tough conditions. GO SWISS!!!!
