3-1 VICTORY AGAINST HIBS BREAKS BAD SPELL AT LAST
With the Germans' track record against the Hibs anything but flattering (0-1 in the Cosmoleague, 1-4 in the Midweek League) coach Joerg demanded a disciplined performance, using a flexible 4-4-2 to keep the midfield tight and asked the tema to patiently wait for counterattacks.
The first 25 minutes saw a very tight encounter with neither side carving out (or giving) any space, let alone producing (or allowing) any goal scoring opportunities. In the 26th minute, at long last, the Germans broke the deadlock by putting a few decent touches together on the right, setting Micha free who squared to Sascha who tapped in from a short distance, 1-0.
The goal opened the game up a bit, allowing the Germans to create further goal scoring opportunities and to gradually take control of the game. As a result Micha had two promising long range attempts on goal, both created by some nice midfield work, while Sascha's powerful header after 32 minutes was cleared off the line. 1-0 it was at halftime, by then well deserved.
GAS kept controlling the match early in the second half, exercising some good pressure on the Hibs' defense. Almost inevitably Volker scored a second on the hour with a superb lob from 25 yards out. However, the match was far from over as a lapse in the German defense merely 60 seconds later allowed the Hibs to get one back.
Micha could have restored the two goal lead had his lob after 65 minutes been blessed with a little bit more luck, but the ball missed the open goal by only a few inches. On the other side a superb safe by Zafar prevented the Hibs from scoring the equalizer from a short range after 70 minutes.
Both teams now clearly fancied their chances for another goal and consequently the final 15 minutes produced a pretty thrilling and fast paced match with Germans and Hibs creating plenty of opportunities. In the end it was, once again, Micha who scored the decisive 3-1 after 83 minutes with a nice shot from the corner of the box. Florian could have even made it 4-1 with two minutes to go after a nice pass from Schoko. But his shot towards the bottom right corner was well parried by the Hibs goalkeeper.
3-1 read the scoreline after 90 minutes with the bad spell chasing the Germans during their recent encounters with the Hibs broken at last. More importantly, however, this result, together with the other decent performances displayed lately, shows that the team has spirit and skills and is thus very well capable to climb a few ranks in the table before the season draws to a finish.
