The pitch conditions and dark clouds looked ominous, but thankfully the game went ahead without any disruptions.
nOn a large & wet pitch, the Brewerkz’s preference for playing the ball on the ground obviously needed to change. It was day for players to battle and play sensible football. Two common themes in our match reports this season have been ‘we gifted an early goal’ and ‘missed too many chances’. Safe to say, against the Hibs we considered a goal in 30 seconds, long ball over the top, our centre back brought down the Hibs strikers for a penalty. 1-0 Hibs.
nThe Brewerkz were soon level after Thomas headed a corner into the bottom corner past the keeper, the Hibs player on the post attempted to block the header, but only managed to help it into the roof of the net. 1-1.
nThe game was evenly balanced at this stage, with both teams trying to come to grips with the conditions. The Hibs went ahead again, a nice finish, but lazy defending from the Brewerkz (again). Half-time 2-1 Hibs.
nThe halftime team talk was focused on defending properly and putting in more effort. It did the trick.
nThe Brewerkz started and continued the second half with more conviction. A free kick won 25 yards out was dispatched into the top right hand corner by Thomas. Gem of a goal. 2-2.
nIt was soon 3-2. Kevin Monne was put through, ran 40 yards and slotted the ball home with the outside of his right foot. Great finish.
nThe Brewerkz had the luxury of brining on 3 quality substitutes in Kelly, Bright and Chris, who had all been rested. This made a big difference and chances were aplenty for the last 25 minutes. We ended up converting two more goals, both for Yazid.
nThe score line up to the last 15 minutes always meant the game could go either way, but on the balance of play and chances, a score line of 5-2 seemed a fair reflection.
nWell played to the Hibs, good battle and a game played in the right spirit. Disappointing to see a Hibs player sent off with 10 to go, seemed a bit harsh, but the league has been fairly clear on talking back to the referees. So another lesson for all of us.
