What are the Chances?

It’s difficult to know whether to regard this result as a point gained, or two points dropped.

n

On the basis of having been 2-0 down at half time, the former. Reflecting the fact that the game should have been put to bed in the first half hour, most certainly the latter, but on another scorching day for a 3 o’clock kick off, the Hotspurs had no one but themselves to blame for not putting another win on the board.

n

The first half was endlessly frustrating, with chance after chance being created, and then spurned, despite Hotspurs playing some decent football and unlocking the Swiss defence at will. The final ball though, it has to be said, still needs work.

n

Lack of concentration at a corner – just about the first Swiss foray into the opposition half – and a break, some hesitant defending, and a second Swiss goal, saw Hotspurs, almost inexplicably, on the back foot. I should mention that Hotspurs hit the woodwork twice in the opening 45 minutes, and also found a Swiss goalkeeper in inspired form. That was half the trouble….we found him way too often.

n

The air would have been blue in the dressing room (if there was a dressing room) but 'clear the air' talks resulted in a much better second half Hotspurs performance and Abbas pulled one back (lobbing the keeper with panache) on 50 minutes following great work from Bruce and Esad.

n

A period of sustained pressure then followed, and Hotspurs levelled things up thanks to super-sub Azlan, who was on the end of a mazy Esad jig in the box.

n

With almost 20 minutes remaining, Hotspurs continued to pile forward in search of a winner, but legs and minds were beginning to tire, and a tired challenge changed the course of the game once again.

n

A free-kick given away 30 yards out; a great strike from the Swiss captain; the Hotspurs keeper making a hash of what should have been a routine save; and unbelievably, the Swiss were 3-2 up with less than 5 minutes left on the clock.

n

Credit to the Hotspurs who continued to push forward and managed to find an equaliser (another one) before full-time – Esad converting a superb Bruce corner, and 3-3 is how it ended.

n

‘A gut wrenching draw’, is the best way to describe the result. The Hotspurs were bitterly disappointed not to take all the points but missed more clear cut chances than should have been necessary to kill off three games.

n

Credit though for the excellent spirit displayed, particularly in the second half, and some encouraging signs to take forward into the remainder of the season.

n

Jamie put in a Man of the Match performance with his boundless energy down the right, but the blue riband definitely goes to Bill in the Swiss goal, who pulled off a string of fine saves to thwart the Hotspurs advances time and again…and again.

n

There’s little doubt that the Swiss will be the happier of the two teams at the result – especially bearing in mind their depleted squad. They worked hard and defended resolutely, and deserved their point for the character they showed.

n

Perhaps the Hotspurs could be accused of missing the point. We missed almost everything else.
