Surprising comeback earned Vikings a draw
3pm kick-off against Germans on a boiling hot Dempsey pitch. Vikings being 9 points ahead of Germans in the league, were looking to increase that lead and battle for 4th spot.
After having a blast Saturday morning when recording our Vikings Song & Music Video, it was time to focus on football. Maybe we forgot to do that, because Germans were quickly in front 2-0 after sloppy defending. It could have been different, as Tommie hit the post when the scoreline was 1-0. Facts were that Germans wanted it more and we failed to show the passion required to win games. We got a goal back before the break, when Kenni rose high above his marker to head in an excellent Morten Ranck cross. 2-1 after a disappointing first half.
Our subs (Cala, Moeller, Johan, Charni, Casper) deserve credit for showing the desire to win challenges and fight for every ball when they were brought on. As we were looking for the equalizer the Germans gave us another blow, when they got in front 3-1. Their top scorer was given way too much time on the ball and should have been tackled. He must have said "vielen dank, mein Herren" as he scored from outside the box.
We still had chances against a shaky German defense. Charni was brought on for Kenni and he looked lively up front. Tommie snapped the ball after the German right back, who failed to control the ball. When proceeding towards goal the ball went on to Charni who made a good run and found himself through with the keeper. Cool finishing and we ere within a goal, 3-2. A glimmer of hope for Vikings, but Germans quickly restored their two goal margin from a deflected shot that left Eu Jin stranded.
4-2 and Vikings didn't look like coming back from this one. People looking very tired, but we suddenly got another chance to make a comeback, when Tommie was brought down inside the box. No doubt about the penalty decision and amazing that the German defender didn't receive a card for taking away a clear scoring opportunity. Anyway, Tommie converted the penalty and Vikings were now fired up for an equalizer. Cala had a long range shot from outside the box and Charni had a one-on-one with the keeper, but we had to wait until MOM Thomas Elbo unleashed his low powerful shot from outside box. 4-4 and we were now going for the win. We had the chance to steal all 3 points in the dying minutes, but Tommie failed to find the onrushing midfielders & strikers after a breakthrough on the right side. The following corner ended up in nothing and the match was over.
One point earned for Vikings and I'm sure Germans felt it was two points lost for them. They wanted it more than us today, but a nice comeback ensured that there are still 9 nice points between Vikings and Germans in the table.
Thanks to refs & linesmen, who had a good game. Vikings are now geared up to welcome 250 participants for the Easter Viking Cup in Singapore.
